The Mamie Garland scholarship was established by the Kappa Chapter, Inc. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania of Chi Eta Phi Sorority Incorporated.

Chi Eta Phi Sorority Incorporated is an organization of registered professional nurses.  It was organized by eleven charter members at the home of Eunice Cook under the guidance of National Organizer Hortense Johnson charter member both the national chapter (Alpha Chapter) and Kappa Chapter.  All charter members are now deceased. Life Member, Lillie Lesene was last one to pass away in July of 2016. 

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to aspiring nurses.

To be eligible for the scholarship applicants must:

    • Must be currently enrolled in a nursing program in good academic standing in Pennsylvania

    • Demonstrate financial need

    • Maintain a minimum cumulative 2.6 quality point average (QPA)

    • Exhibit leadership potential

    • Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply

    • Scholarship recipients must commit to attending the Annual Maime Garland Scholarship Luncheon

      African American students are strongly encouraged to apply

POISE awards one or two Mamie Garland Scholarship awards annually, worth approximately $3,000 each
